Synopsis

De Ideale Allochtoon (The Ideal Foreigner) is a 26-minute documentary film about the racism Asian women face in the Netherlands on a daily basis. Sparked by the ignorance of others, we witness how a community responds to xenophobia and hate through sensitive but ultimately positive discussions about the perception of Asian females in the Netherlands and the responsibility to view every individual as equal. Asians, who are often linked to Chinese in particular, seem to dodge the negative association as they would be hard workers, smart students and generally those who mean no harm. Therefore, easy victims for racist slurs and funny intended depictions that actually cause a lot of psychological damage. Not to mention physical damage, especially with a pandemic such as the corona virus that started to emerge in early 2020. The Asian communities are looked at more than ever before, and that is exactly why they will have to stand up, together, for their rights and fellow man. The documentary film’s narrative unfolds through a series of three storylines: one that focues on daily encounters with racism, one that focuses on dealing with racism through the eyes of a mother, and one that focuses on encounters with racism via digital media.
